The Albanian Riviera and Tirana are a natural extension of a Montenegro road trip — Shkodër is barely 30 minutes from the border. Here's what you need to know before you drive south.
Is it allowed?
On selected offers, yes. Albania-bound trips require the supplier's approval and valid cross-border insurance (Green Card). Conditions differ between suppliers and locations, so check the Rental Conditions of the offer you choose — or tell us your plan when booking and we'll match you with a supplier that allows it. Border crossings
- Sukobin–Muriqan (near Ulcinj): the coastal route, best for Velipojë and Shkodër.
- Božaj–Hani i Hotit (near Podgorica): the main route to Shkodër and Tirana.
Both are usually quick outside peak season; summer afternoons can mean 30–60 minute waits.
Popular routes
Podgorica → Shkodër (~1 h) → Tirana (~2 h 30 min total). From the coast: Budva → Ulcinj → Sukobin → Shkodër. Starting from Podgorica Airport car rental is often the easiest for northern Albania. Roads on the main corridors are good; avoid unlit rural roads at night.

What to have with you
Passport, driving licence, the car's documents, Green Card and the supplier's authorization. Fuel is slightly cheaper in Albania; local currency is the lek, but euros are widely accepted at borders and fuel stations.
