Renting an Automatic Car in Montenegro

Most visitors from left-hand-drive countries prefer an automatic — especially on the Bay of Kotor switchbacks and steep coastal roads. Here is what to expect for availability, the price premium and where an automatic really helps.

Are automatics easy to find?

Yes on selected offers — but they sell out first in July and August. Economy and compact automatics are the first to go at Tivat and Podgorica airports. Compare live stock on Xpert Rent and book early if you need a specific class.

Outside peak season, choice is wider and same-day pickup is often possible. In summer, reserve at least 2–4 weeks ahead for the best models and rates.

How much more does an automatic cost?

Expect roughly a 15–30% premium over a comparable manual. Exact gaps vary by season, car class and airport — see our Montenegro car rental prices guide for full 2026 ranges.

The premium is usually worth it if you are not used to manuals, driving a camper-style route, or spending most days in stop-start coastal traffic. Filter for automatic transmission when you search so the total price (including deposit terms) is clear before you book.

Where an automatic helps most

Pick up at Tivat Airport car rental for the Bay of Kotor and Budva Riviera, or at Podgorica Airport car rental if you are heading inland first. An automatic is especially useful on:

• Kotor–Lovćen serpentine — tight hairpins and constant gear changes.
• Coastal summer traffic — Budva, Tivat and Kotor queues are easier without a clutch.
• Mountain day trips — Durmitor and northern routes with steep climbs.
